On understanding the Red Ring (and how to cheat it)

Main Post:

TL:DR; you should be doing yoga more often!

Introduction The move ring can be a mystery to a lot of beginning users of the Apple Watch. Closing the move ring can become a mission on its own, with some people going to great lengths to try and eke out that last 1% on 11:59pm to be able to lengthen their streak and receive those coveted awards.

I’m no stranger to this phenomenon, I vividly remember doing jumping jacks on the parking lot next to the highway because I was doing a 13 hour drive and while my EV was charging I discovered my move ring was still wayyy to low to make it to the end.

What is the Red Ring? The Red Ring, or the Move ring, is the one that measures burned calories. Not the time spent while moving, which a lot of beginners think. The time spent is measured by the Yellow ‘Excercise’ Ring. Yes, this may be confusing.

How does it measure your burned calories? It simply uses your heart rate, and by using your other metrics like age, gender, height and weight it can calculate how much calories you burn for every heartbeat. If you’re active, your heartbeat rises so you must be burning more calories. Your watch is trained to detect elevated heart rates and draw conclusions from that.

Why is my ring only going up to 500cals? I thought people burned way more during the day? First of all, know that you are free to change the daily goals. The 500 calories is a suggestion by Apple for what an average human could be doing daily. You can lower it if you’re having trouble making your goals, or you can raise it when you think 500 calories is too easy. It’s up to you.

Second, the Red Ring is all about active calories. If you’re going about your day doing normal stuff, you’ll see the Red Ring won’t fill up that quickly. If you’re walking up and down the stairs a couple of times, or chasing after your kids, you will have a raised heart rate and the watch will recognize this as an activity and will count these burned calories towards the Red Ring calories.

Well what about my inactive calories then? Open the Fitness app on your phone, tap on the rings and scroll down to the breakdown of your Red Ring. You will see that it has two metrics; in big letters the calories that went towards your move goal, but underneath the graph you will see smaller text with the Total amount of calories. So you see your inactive calories are also logged, they’re just not added towards your goal.

You were saying something about cheating the ring? Yes, now we know the difference between active and inactive calories, we can use that to cheat the system. Keep in mind that once you start an activity from the watch, ALL of your burned calories are active calories.

So all you have to do is start an activity and just sit around. You’ll see that the Red Ring will fill up way quicker than usual because now everything counts. Only thing is; depending on your settings for auto pause, your watch might keep asking you if you’re still busy with your activity. So let’s say you’ve started an Outdoor Running activity but you’re sitting on your couch, you’re not fooling your watch.

Luckily there is one activity that is specifically designed to track ‘sitting around and doing nothing’ which is the Yoga activity. It will still occasionally ask you if you’re still Yoga-ing around because it has no way to detect any changes, but this happens way less often than with running/cycling/rock climbing.

As a last resort there is also a way to manually add burned calories to your watch. Open the Health app on your phone, go to Browse -> Activity -> Workouts -> Add data (top right corner). Here you can fake a workout by filling out the metrics yourself, don’t forget the calories burned to close that Red Ring!

Now the most important question is; are you cheating the system or are you cheating yourself?

Top Comment: Why the hell would you want to cheat yourself? You wont get skinnier by cheating the red ring lol

What does the red ring mean? MANY famous people wear it.

Main Post:

Many celebrities wear some form of this ring. What does it mean? Examples: Tom Hanks, Oprah, That lady from orange is new black. Obama, George Clooney.

Top Comment: Also, while the ring appears to have been identified as as normal ring, I believe, from the names you mention, particularly Tom Hanks https://www.sfgate.com/politics/article/how-QAnon-became-obsessed-with-Tom-Hanks-16913144.php you may possibly believe it's a symbol for some sort of "secret society" and the widely shared, but totally ficticious pizzagate conspiracy. https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-trending-38156985 You'll often find that most conspiracy theories are, when it boils down to it, plain old antisemitism. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/aug/25/qanon-conspiracy-theory-explained-trump-what-is So if you're looking for the group to confirm a ficticious conspiracy, you probably won't be in luck.

Red Ring Help

Main Post:

my 360 E got the red ring. opened it up, cleaned it out, put on new paste, nothing. I heard it could be a sawdering issue because it works fine till an hdmi is plugged in, so opened it up again. left in the necessaries to turn it on, but pushed down on an IC and it worked fine until I let go. there is no visible issues with it so I plan on taking it in tomorrow to get it looked at. is it worth it? or would it honestly just be better to get a new 360

Main Post:

The RROD was notorious during early 360 days to the point it became an icon for 360 but in a bad way. How did your 360 failed on you?

Was I the only one who didn't get the red ring of death on 360?

Main Post:

Im watching a documentary on the start of xbox, and I knew the red ring of death was a pretty common issue bit I literally never had it. I had friends who's consoles died from it, but mine never did and I played that console for YEARS. They mentioned in the documentary the failure rate was around 100%. Did I just get super lucky? Or did more of you guys get console without that defect?

And yes, I had the first gen 360

Yes you were the only one. Congratulations

Boyfriend’s xbox giving me the red ring of death! Please help!!

Main Post:

My apologies in advance, English is not my first language.

My boyfriend brought over his slim xbox360 a couple days ago so we could play on it together and he left it here. I had used it on my own yesterday and it was working just fine until late last night when I was playing Sonic Allstar’s Racing and it suddenly froze and stopped working all together- I believe this is called a crash. I didn’t really think much of it because I know that xbox 360’s are older and I go through the same trouble with some of my little brother’s wii games that crash. I have done searching across the web to try and find a solution to this problem because I don’t want to be the girlfriend who breaks her boyfriend’s xbox. I keep getting different answers on what the problem is so, to keep this as clean as possible here’s all the problems i went through:

  1. It does not have a hardrive so there’s no problem with that
  2. I left it off all of last night so it could not have overheated (I think?)
  3. The power supply is clean and has no debris in it, same with the console

Please, please help. There has got to be a way to fix this.

Top Comment:

Your english was not bad at all.

I hope your boyfriend does not blame you, and eventually find a solution

Was I the only person who didn't get the red ring of death on 360?

Main Post:

I bought my 360 not long after launch and played that thing for years! I'm watching a documentary on xbox and they said the failure rate was near 100% and with how much I played, I'm shocked mine never died on me. Was anyone else also lucky?

Top Comment: I went to the store and made them bring out a bunch of them until I saw one with the Jasper chip barcode. Never red ringed. My favorite console of all time, peak Call of Duty, peak online gaming, if Microsoft just copied everything about the 360 and updated the graphics only they would be ahead of PS and Nintendo.

What's the cause or causes of the red ring?

Main Post: What's the cause or causes of the red ring?

Top Comment: Red ring of death is caused by connectors inside the components (e.g. GPU) of Xbox 360 breaking due to the console's temperature going from hot to cold too frequently. Xbox hardware engineers explained it in a recent official documentary for Xbox 20th anniversary: https://www.gamingbible.co.uk/news/xbox-explains-the-red-ring-of-death-20211217 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2d6IMBS8oY
